Keeping Text URL Links
in PDF Exports
This can really be classified as a Troubleshooting
item as well as a Tip. Whichever, it's a workaround for a bug
found in the PDF export in FreeHand 9. It's a bug regarding adding a
URL link to selected text. See the bug and a little trick to make it
work for you below.
Version: 9 (This is fixed in FreeHand
10)

The Bug
 |
|
First I'll explain the bug that
you may encounter with the PDF export and keeping URLs intact.
Above is the sample art I'll be
using and export as a PDF file later. I want to add a URL to just
the word macromedia at the bottom.
|
 |
|
First I select the text I want to
add the URL to. Then I go under the Window menu -> Xtras
-> URL Editor to make my editor active like shown above.
Under the pull-down menu I choose
New and create the new URL. Then while the text is still
selected, I click on the new URL to apply it to the text.
|
 |
|
Now when you Export to PDF format,
go into the Options area to see the setup like above. Make
sure you turn on the option to Export URLs.
|
 |
|
Now open this PDF in Acrobat Reader.
OOPS! Looks like when I place the mouse over where I put the link,
it doesn't work. Notice that the pointer is just a "Grabber"
Hand, not the telltale"Pointer" Hand.
Well there is a workaround that
perhaps many Flash users will be familiar with below.
|
The Workaround
 |
|
Going back to the document, add
a Rectangle (or any other shape) around the text that you
want to add the URL too.
Then set any fills or strokes to
None.
|
 |
|
Make the URL Editor visible
again, and add the link to the selected rectangle.
You see where this is going yet?
We are essentially creating an invisible button that will
contain the URL rather than the text. You can do pretty much the
same thing in Flash to get the same results, as you are very limited
to how Flash adds URLs to text.
|
 |
|
Now after you Export the
file again, open the resulting PDF file again.
As you can see above, the URL is
now active and it will take you into your browser when clicked.
You can also edit this URL within
the full version of Acrobat to add an outline or to change the
URL entirely.
|
This is a pretty significant bug, and
we can only hope that it gets cleared up soon in future versions. If
you have any other tips regarding creating PDF files or using the URL
Editor, please send them in.
