Creating a Spider Web
Even though it's really off-season, this
is a great tutorial on how to create great looking spider webs, as shown
above at right.
You'll be learning another unique way
to utilize the Spiral and Bend Xtras. More below.
Version: 7 and above
| |
1)
First we need
to setup the Spiral Xtra by double-clicking the icon shown
above. Above are the settings I'm going to be using. I highly
recommend that you experiment with different settings here, there
are many possibilities.
2)
Next on your document,
click-drag out a new spiral like shown above. It can really be
any size and it doesn't matter where the end or beginning end
up.
3)
Now while the
spiral is still selected, go under the Xtras menu -> Distort
-> Add Points or use the Xtra icon tool shown above.
This will add new points between
all of the existing points in the Spiral.
4)
Next we need to
setup the Bend Xtra tool. Bring up the Bend options by
double-clicking the Xtra icon shown above. Enter in an amount
that you wish to work with. Here I chose to keep the default amount
of 5.
5)
While the spiral
is still selected, click and drag from the center to the
top of the spiral. You will see the spiral slowly turn
into a spider web shape. When you're happy, release the mouse
button and you'll end up with the standard web shape shown above.
6)
To start finishing
up the spider web we'll draw in the lines that hold the whole
thing together. It's much easier to have Snap to Point
turned on for this step, so go under the View menu and
turn that on.
Starting with the outside
points of the web, drag a line to the center. Make sure that the
line overlaps all of the inner points as you draw these in. Watch
the animation above to see it in action.
7)
After you are
finished with the lines, you can then go back and extend them
out of the web so they can anchor to something.
Don't worry if the center is off,
because in the real world, spider webs are not perfect either.....
heh heh. But if you need to, go back into the center and add more
web lines if you wish.
To get half of a web like shown
at the top of this page, just use the Knife tool and cut
away the parts you don't want. Then fill in the gaps with anchor
lines.
For more variation, use the 3D
Rotation Xtra on the web. Group all the shapes together and
distort it with the Xtra. You can really get some great looking
web shapes.
Well I hope that this helped you learn
some more great uses for the Spiral and Bend Xtra tools. If you have
any neat ideas to share, please send them in. Have fun!
