Inline Graphics on a Path

Ever since you could attach text to a path in FreeHand, you could create some very cool effects with text. The same goes with Inline Graphics in text blocks (see the tip Creating a Drop Cap in the Tips Archive). This tutorial is another great and creative way that combines both techniques to get some very fun results.

Version: 4 and above

First, decide what you want to be applied to a path. For this exercise we'll be using some very cool ants that Mike sent. You can download your very own copy of these ants in the Custom Enhancements section of this site.

Other objects you could use are footprints, cars or even a train.

Next create an empty text block. One at a time, Copy the objects and Paste them into the text block. These are now Inline Graphics. You can add as many as you like.

Now create the path you want to have the objects attached to. I've decided to make the path wavy like shown above.

Select both the text block with the objects and the new path you created. Under the Text menu select Attach to Path. You should get similar results as shown above.

You may notice the square with the solid circle in it on the right. That means there are still more objects that the path couldn't fit. If you choose, you can extend the path to fit the remaining objects using the Pen or Bezigon tool.

Now comes one of the best parts. You can edit the size and placement of the objects by using the Text Inspector palette. Using the Text tool, select an object on the path and use the Inspector to change certain attributes.

Above, I changed the Size and the Baseline shift of one ant to make it look more random in appearance.

Another great thing about all of this, is that you can edit the path and get even more random results. Above I've cloned the first group, moved it down then changed the appearance of the path by moving certain points or curve handles.

The paths can be shown by going into the Object Inspector and turning on the option Show Path.

With all of those control options, you can really go a long way with only a few objects to start with. Have fun!
