Finding Middle Gradient Colors

FreeHand 7 gave us the ability to create multiple color Gradient fills in the Fill Inspector palette. The only problem is that the palette isn't big enough to show us the name of those colors, only the first and last color. Below is a quick and easy way to find out those colors.

Version: 7 and above (FreeHand 10 now shows you what color it is by just clicking on the swatch)

Above is a circle with a multicolored Gradient Fill. In the Fill Inspector you can see that the middle colors names are hidden. This could make things tricky should you need to change those color values later, or if you're just curious as to what those colors are.

The first thing you want to do is to bring the Tint palette into view. This can be grouped with any other palette and you don't have to put it next to the Fill inspector.

In FreeHand 7, just click on the Tint button in the Color Mixer palette.

Make sure the object is still selected (so you can see the gradient information). With the Option key held down or the Control key in Windows, click on the middle gradient colors.

You should see them appear in the Tint palette. Watch the animation above as I get the named colors from the middle.

Special Note

Make sure that all of your colors are named, otherwise you'll just see a blank name in the Tints palette like shown above. To quickly name all of your colors, go into the Xtras menu -> Colors -> Name All Colors.

Version Addendum

FreeHand 10 now shows you what color you have just by clicking on the color swatch in the Gradient like shown above.

That was a great little trick that was recently discussed in the Macromedia FreeHand Newsgroup. If you haven't visited there yet, I highly recommend it. There are great people that visit regularly, including some Macromedia Tech support staff and yours truly of course. There is a link to it from the Links & Resources page.
