FREEHAND 5.0 README As you begin using FreeHand you will notice many excellent additions that put the fun back into illustration. We can't resist improving FreeHand up until the last minute, and since our goal is to keep you informed of our product so that you can make the best of it, we've included below some important information you may need. INSTALLING THE CD VERSION OF FREEHAND When installing FreeHand, look in the "FreeHand" directory on the CD drive and double-click on "setup.exe." WIN32S MESSAGE WHILE INSTALLING FREEHAND If you are running Win95 (Chicago) or Windows NT, ignore any message you receive to install Win32s. LAUNCHING FREEHAND ON WIN32S If a "Win32s - Error" message is received at launch, the Win32s system needs to be installed by running the "setup.exe" from the "fh5\win32s\disc1" directory. Win32s is a Microsoft product that is applied by running its own installer. The Win32s install disc images are obtained by running the FreeHand 5.0 Standard or Custom install options. After Win32s is installed, the Win32s directory in fh5 (containing the disc images) can be deleted to free hard drive space. Disc images are not the actual Win32s system. TERMINATING FREEHAND IN WIN32S Per Microsoft documentation, do not use Ctrl + Alt + Del to terminate a Win32s-based application because you will exit Windows. INSTALLING FREEHAND 5.0 OVER A NETWORK FreeHand 5.0 can be installed over a network, for organisations that purchase multiple copies. Drag the files from each installation disc into a directory on your network hard disc. Double-click or run "setup.exe" to begin the installation. FREEHAND FILE LIST If you wish to discard any of the FreeHand files, there is a complete list of all the files FreeHand installed in "logfile.txt" in the "c:\fh5" directory. LAUNCHING FREEHAND 5.0 The first time you launch FreeHand, you will be asked to enter your name, company and serial number, so have that information ready. The serial number can be found on your registration card. PREFERENCES The FreeHand Preferences file named "fhprefs.txt" is located in the "c:\fh5" directory. To restore the default preferences, simply delete the preferences file and launch FreeHand. USERPREP FILES UserPrep files are included to make printing to certain PostScript devices easier. Look in the directory "c:\fh5\usenglsh\userprep" and glance through the UserPrep readme file named "readme.txt" to find out more about this feature. PS2MAC PROGRAM Included with FreeHand is a program that allows Windows FreeHand files to print across Macintosh printer drivers (to image-setters). See the readme file named "ps2mac.txt" in the "c:\fh5" directory for more information. DISABLING AUTO-EXPANDING TEXT BLOCKS TO APPLY TEXT ALIGNMENT Issue: When FreeHand 5.0 is installed for the first time, it enables a number of new features and updates from FreeHand 4.0. One of these new features is the "Auto-Expanding Text Container." This feature allows text blocks to automatically resize as text is added or removed. This feature is especially useful when titling both horizontally and vertically. There are tradeoffs, however, in that you cannot apply alignment afterwards. Solution: An auto-expanding FreeHand 5 text block can be turned into a FreeHand 4 style text box in one of three ways: a) Reselect the text box and double-click the two "hollow" (or white) anchor points on the right and bottom boundaries of the box. This allows you to manipulate the text box as though it were a fixed size text block created by clicking and dragging the text tool. b) Select the text box with the pointer tool. In the Object Inspector, click the right expanding button and the downwards expanding button, both located to the right of the width and height measurements, so that they are no longer highlighted. This produces the same effect as method "a" above. c) To disable auto-expanding text blocks as a default, go to the Preferences dialog box. Select the category "Editing/Text," and deselect the box that says "New default-sized text containers Auto-Expand." This disables the auto-expanding text block feature, causing all new text containers to behave as they would in FreeHand 4. USER MANUAL REFERENCE TO TRANSFORM PALETTE USER INTERFACE Please note that the FreeHand 5.0 User Manual shows only the Macintosh version of the Transform palette user interface. In FreeHand for Macintosh, the Transform palette's command button reads "Apply" for every function (rotating, moving, scaling, skewing, and reflecting). In the Windows version, the Transform palette's command button corresponds to its function and reads "Rotate," "Move," "Scale," "Skew," and "Reflect," respectively. The Windows Getting Started tutorial supports the Windows user interface. TEXT EDITOR Please note that the Text Editor box has no check box for 12- point black as the On-line Help suggests. The text will always display the Windows default font (usually Arial). XTRAS SHORT CUT KEY Use of the short cut key to repeat an Xtra (Ctrl + Alt + Shift + X) conflicts with the preference that instructs FreeHand to consume original paths. If you select "Path operations consume original paths" under "Preferences" and if you use the above short cut key to repeat a path operation ("Intersect," for example), your object(s) will maintain both the original and the new path. This happens because holding down the "Shift" key while performing a path operation tells FreeHand to temporarily ignore the preference to consume paths. Since the "Shift" key is also part of the command to repeat an Xtra, we recommend that you access the path operation through the Xtras menu to maintain your paths preference. OPENING CORELDRAW (CDR) FILES FreeHand 5 is the first major drawing application that can open and convert files created with CorelDraw 5. While FreeHand does a good job at converting most CorelDraw elements, you should be aware that the conversion process is not perfect, and you are bound to come across files that do not convert exactly into FreeHand. In fact, since FreeHand and CorelDraw do not have an exact feature set correspondence, a perfect conversion of every file will never be possible. Nevertheless, for the future we are committed to improving the conversion process, and expect to support even more components of CorelDraw 5 and CorelDraw 6 files. To summarize: paths, text, colours, strokes, and the most commonly used fills convert exactly into FreeHand with no noticeable differences. But certain other effects and information, including the more esoteric fills which have no FreeHand counterparts, will not appear in FreeHand. For your reference, we have included this list of known file conversion limitations. We hope that being aware of these issues will help you determine which of your files will make the transition from CorelDraw most easily. * 3D objects with a light source applied convert with solid fills. * Style and layer information does not convert. * Custom arrowheads convert to a standard FreeHand arrowhead. * Colours do not automatically appear in FreeHand's Colour palette. Using FreeHand's "Name All Colours" command will add them. * Radial fills convert as centreed radial fills. * Multicolour fills convert as two-colour fills. * Powerlines and lens effects convert as solid fills. * Bitmapped textures, pattern fills, PostScript fills, and conical fills convert as objects without fills. * Text on a path converts as a path and a text object. To rejoin these in FreeHand, select both the text container and the path, and choose "Bind To Path" from the Type menu. This semi-automatic approach was taken since FreeHand's superior typography will usually result in different text flows around the path, requiring manual adjustment. * Columns, tabs, underlines, text style sheets, some special characters, indenting, and enveloped text convert as text without those attributes. As with text on a path, this semi- automatic approach was taken because FreeHand's attention to typographic details usually result in different line breaks than CorelDraw, requiring some manual attention. * Embedded BMP's, TIFF's, and EPS's convert as objects with no fill. * Guides and masked objects (paste insides) do not convert. PLACING COREL 5 FILES CONTAINING COREL CLIPART You may experience a message that reads "Error writing to device AUX" when placing Corel 5 files containing Corel Clipart. Windows is trying to generate a debug message for the programmer's benefit. Save your work and restart Windows. EMBEDDED FREEHAND 5.0 OLE OBJECTS FreeHand does not support embedded FreeHand 5.0 OLE data in other applications under Windows NT. However, FreeHand does support this data under Win32s. APPEARANCE OF CGM FILES When you open or place CGM files in FreeHand, filled objects with a small stroke of the same colour appear to have a stroke of a different colour; the stroke and the fill are actually the same colour. This is due to the dithering of the colour of the stroke. At high magnifications the colour no longer dithers, so the stroke and the fill appear the same. If you select the stroke colour and drop it into the Colour Mixer well, it will have the same CMYK values as the fill colour. Furthermore, printing the document yields a stroke and a fill of the same colour. POSTSCRIPT PRINTING REMINDER Remember that when you send a file to a PostScript printer, all units of measure convert to points. Rounding problems may occur when formatting a page in other units of measure (mm, inches, etc.). For example, a set of dashes that the user specifies as being a 10 mm dash will round to the nearest point on output to any PS printer. LINOTRONIC IMAGE-SETTERS FreeHand may show the following PostScript error when used with a Linotronic Image-setter. %%invalid access[offending command: put] for postscript level 1 Rips %%invalid access[offending command: findfont] for postscript level 2 Rips To fix this, re-download all the fonts to the RIP's hard drive using the Linotronic Font downloader 2.5.4 (or the most recent version). (This has to be done only once.) Be sure to use the TIME button instead of SPACE. Linotronic Image-setters using the RIP 60 may cause the yellow plate to posterise upon separation. To correct this problem, set the maximum colour steps to 255 in the Output Options dialog box. Copyright 1988-1995 Macromedia, Inc. All rights reserved.
